Data we collect
Table of Contents
Server logs
Our web server records standard request data each time a page loads. This includes your IP address, browser type and version, device type, operating system, referring page, the pages you view on this site, and the date and time of your visit. We use this to keep the site running, diagnose errors, and block abusive traffic.
Cookies and similar technologies
Cookies are small files stored in your browser. We and our third-party services use them to remember preferences, measure traffic, and serve ads. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings. In Chrome, go to Settings, Privacy and security, Third-party cookies. In Firefox, go to Settings, Privacy & Security, Cookies and Site Data. In Safari, go to Settings, Privacy. Blocking cookies may break parts of the site, such as comment login or ad display.
Comment form
When you leave a comment on a post, the form collects your name, email address, and website URL (optional), plus your comment text and IP address. Your name and comment are shown publicly. Your email is not published. We keep comments until you ask us to delete them.
Third-party services
Google Analytics 4
We use Google Analytics 4 to see which guides get read, how visitors move through the site, and where traffic comes from. GA4 sets cookies and collects your IP address, device and browser data, and interaction events. Google retains this data according to Google settings. You can opt out of Google Analytics by installing the browser add-on at https://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout. You can also manage Google ad personalization at https://adssettings.google.com.
Ezoic
Ezoic is our ad management and site-speed platform. It serves ads on our pages and sets cookies to do so. Ezoic partners include Google ad technology, which may use your data to select and measure ads. You can opt out of personalized advertising through the Google Ad Settings link above or through your browser’s cookie controls.
Amazon Associates
Some articles contain Amazon Associates affiliate links. If you click one and buy something, Amazon may set cookies and track the referral. We do not receive your name, address, or payment details from Amazon. Amazon’s own privacy policy governs that data.
Why we collect it
- To run the site and fix technical problems (server logs).
- To measure readership and improve our guides (Google Analytics 4).
- To display ads that fund the site (Ezoic and its partners).
- To show comments and reply to readers (comment form).
- To earn affiliate commission on some product links (Amazon Associates).
Retention
Server logs are kept for a limited period for security and troubleshooting. Analytics data is retained according to Google settings. Comments stay published until you ask us to remove them. Ezoic and Amazon retain data under their own policies.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, including under the GDPR and CCPA, you may have the right to access the personal data we hold about you, request deletion, object to processing, and opt out of the sale or sharing of personal data for targeted advertising. To exercise these rights, use our Contact page. You can opt out of Google Analytics with the browser add-on linked above and manage ad personalization at https://adssettings.google.com.
Children under 13
This site is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal data from them. If you believe a child has submitted data here, contact us through the Contact page and we will delete it.
External links
Our guides link to other sites, including Amazon and supplier pages. We are not responsible for their privacy practices. Read their policies before submitting data.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as our tools or legal duties change. The date at the top shows the latest revision. Continued use of the site after an update means you accept the revised policy.
